September in Maine
It's here! Maine's signature month is upon us and I for one couldn't be more excited to celebrate cooler evenings, bolder sunsets and crisp clear days. With summer coming to a close we're trying to fit in all the neglected must-dos and abandoned adventures. There's still time to pack up a picnic and head to the beach! Camping trips, overnights on the water, heading inland for a weekend of hiking - there's still time! At least that's what I keep telling myself.
In reality we're in the middle of remodeling and moving to a new house. We're prepping our current place for renters and every spare minute ends up involving a paint brush or cardboard box. Life is busy, so I’m all in for uncomplicated fall weekends.
Apple picking, pork chops on the back porch and warm, spicy beverages are going to be the go-to. Think comfort food close to home. Our cookbook of the month, The Farmers Dinner Cookbook fits the bill with over 150 New England inspired recipes focused on seasonal dining. The books content is fantastic and the story is even better – chefs working with farmers to create universal wins for all involved.
SKORDO’s latest addition to our Blends and Rubs collection, Masala Chai Spice Blend, is going to be in everything I cook this month. That’s not a joke. Cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, black pepper, star anise, ginger and fennel come together to make the perfect blend for boosting coffee, spicing up a tea cake or dressing a leg of lamb. Forget PPS Season, this fall it’s all about Masala Chai.
And trust me, there will be apples! I’ll be sharing my mom’s recipe for a sour cream apple cake. We call it a cake, but it’s a coffee cake… or a lunch cake… or a who needs dinner just eat this kind of cake. Plus, we’ll share a few ideas for apple sauce and our favorite ways to liven up store bought apple cider (Hint: bourbon, Masala Chai and Mulling Spices).
So, throw a sweater on and stick with us this month for all your fall food inspiration. Let’s get cooking!
